Gahwa Championships 2019
To celebrate the heritage of Gahwa, a much-cherished aspect of the region’s culture, the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi is organising the first ever ‘Gahwa Championships’ due to take place in the UAE capital. Building on the success of its Bait Al Gahwa initiative, which aims to document and protect Gahwa as an essential element of Emirati culture, the Championships will consist of five different categories, all designed to test the knowledge and practice of participants in areas such as the heritage of Gahwa; bean selection and roasting; and Gahwa preparation and serving. The Championships will also feature a beverage concept award, and prize money.
Gahwa is an integral aspect to Arab and Emirati hospitality, as it has always been, and remains, a central part of Arab culture and has over the years become a symbolic act of generosity, with its preparation and serving marked by elaborate traditions and rituals. Reflecting the cultural importance of this beverage, all of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman and Qatar had Arabic coffee inscribed in 2015 on the UNESCO ‘Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’.
The inaugural championships coincide with the region’s premier F&B and hospitality fair, SIAL Middle East 2019, and will have several categories that test contestants’ skills and knowledge.
The final day of registration will be October 31st. If you believe you have what it takes to be the best Sane’ Al Gahwa (Coffee-maker) or Roaster, or have a great beverage concept using Gahwa, register now!
