In this talk, Mahshid Rafiei and Jean-Paul Kelly will explore the effects of naming in colonial projects and the use of capitonyms to verify cultural fictions.

This conversation begins with the myth of piracy in the Gulf during the 18th and early 19th centuries, when the region was named ‘The Pirate Coast’ by the British to delegitimize indigenous Gulf rulers and to expand their commercial and territorial control from the Indian Ocean to the Gulf.

Thinking through this period, they will discuss the aesthetic operations that seek to distinguish something from the realm of the everyday, whether to elevate it as Myth or to ostracize it as Other.
