Palestinian Embroidery Workshop
This workshop will introduce its participants to Tatreez, a traditional form of Palestinian embroidery. During the session, Joanna Barakat will discuss the history and cultural context of Palestinian embroidery from various regions in Palestine prior to 1948 and how it has changed in both form and meaning since then.
Participants will learn how different artists incorporate Tatreez in their work and after a demonstration on how to cross-stitch, participants will cross-stitch a motif.
By the end of the first day, attendees will leave with a new understanding of the meanings behind the motifs, the history and culture from which they stem and a new skill that they can continue to develop.
On the second and third day, participants will work on a project using waste canvas to create a wearable item such as a tote bag, that they have personally embroidered.
